How to Master Contouring: A Beginner’s Guide

Contouring is a technique that enhances and defines the natural structure of your face, giving it more dimension and shape. Whether you’re looking for a subtle everyday glow or a dramatic evening look, contouring can help you achieve the perfect balance.

Here’s a step-by-step beginner’s guide to mastering the art of contouring.

Step 1: Prep Your Skin

Before diving into contouring, always start with a clean and moisturized face. Apply a primer to smooth the skin and create a flawless canvas for your makeup.

Step 2: Foundation and Concealer

Start by applying a foundation that matches your skin tone. Use concealer to brighten the under-eye area and any blemishes. This will give you an even base to work with and highlight areas you want to enhance.

Step 3: Choose Your Contour Products

The right products make a huge difference. For beginners, cream or stick contours are easiest to blend. You’ll need a contour shade that's a few shades darker than your skin tone and a highlight shade that’s a few shades lighter.

Step 4: Contouring the Face

To contour, apply the darker shade under your cheekbones, along the jawline, and on the sides of your nose. Blend well to create soft, natural shadows. For the forehead, apply a bit of contour along the hairline to make it appear smaller.

Step 5: Highlighting

Use your lighter shade on the high points of your face — the tops of your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, the center of your forehead, and the chin. This brings attention to these areas, giving your face a lifted, sculpted appearance.

Step 6: Blend, Blend, Blend

Blending is key! Use a makeup sponge or brush to seamlessly blend all the products into your skin. Make sure there are no harsh lines.

Tools You'll Need:
  • Contour stick or powder
  • Highlighting concealer or powder
  • Makeup sponge or brushes (angled contour brush, blending brush)
  • Setting powder to lock everything in place
Contouring is ideal for photoshoots, special occasions, or when you want to add some extra definition to your makeup look. With practice, you’ll be contouring like a pro in no time!
